About Me

Maria Puzanov, MD

My path to psychiatry was not linear. After studying economics and Spanish language and literature in college, I began my career in corporate finance before ultimately pursuing medicine. With a foundation in the liberal arts, I was drawn to psychiatry by a deep interest in the complexity of individual stories. My personal and professional experiences inform a thoughtful, nuanced approach to care and allow me to connect with patients across diverse life experiences.

I earned my medical degree at the Indiana University School of Medicine and completed psychiatry residency at the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt residency program. During residency I pursued additional training with experts in women’s mental health and psychodynamic psychotherapy. I completed a Psychoanalytic Fellowship Program at the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis. In 2023 I was awarded the Clarence G. Schulz Prize for psychotherapy. While in residency I also completed the National Curriculum of Reproductive Psychiatry Intensive training course.

After residency training I became an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. I specialized in caring for the mental health of pregnant and postpartum women. I also supervised and taught psychiatry residents to provide compassionate and evidence-based care in the perinatal clinic. Additionally, I maintained a small general psychiatry practice and provided intensive outpatient care.

I am currently pursuing additional training in psychoanalytic therapy.
